Tivoli garden is known as the world second-oldest and the second-popular amusement park located in Denmark. Istedgade is probably the most infamous street in Vesterbro and all of Copenhagen. If you are new to Copenhagen , you probably haven't got the greatest idea of where to go, or what to do. Each part of the city has its own vibe and things of interest. First, we are going to put our history caps on, as the history here is just wonderful. Vesterbro means Western Bridge and refers back to the time that there was a moat around most of Copenhagen.
The area has always been known for its more rowdy nature, and this goes back to the s. The area is adjacent to the old butcher and meatpacking industry, and in the days of yore, those workers wanted to party , and Istedgade provided the place for that. During World War II, the area was known for its resistance against the occupying force, and in the summer of , it came to a real conflict. A general strike was started following the execution of resistance fighters, and the entire city shut down, starting in Istedgade.
The occupying forces responded by sending almost a thousand troops into Copenhagen in order to restore order. It runs parallel to Vesterbrogade, so head down one and back the other. I won't put a spin on it, this is the rougher part of Copenhagen in some ways.
