During this period, a wide range of ethnological investigations were carried out to answer a range of questions on native society and its behaviour, something which was believed to be important both from administrative and scientific interests.
This was also the time when ideas of liberal governance were gaining ground in Britain and there were strong voices favouring an extension of such high virtues to the British colonies, possibly preparing the intellectual framework for the logic of the civilizing nation. The colonial administrators were caught in the midst of this thought current and they were continually forced to think how the metropolitan political doctrines like the ones advanced by James Mill, John Stuart Mill and James Fitzjames Stephen could be adopted in the alien lands.

In the present context of continually increasing number of voices being raised for equality and respect for women, an analysis of the practices of prostitution of yore seem like the source of all the rampant sexism and discrimination against women.
But one cannot deny that the demand for beauty and pleasure has existed since time immemorial. It is only since the establishment of the marital traditions that prostitution has come out in its essence and grew into the multi-faceted trade that it is today, along with all the socio-cultural and economic implications.
